Who We Are

The Central Texas chapter of Docomomo US — an all-volunteer nonprofit preserving Modern Movement architecture.

Founded by neighbors, not bureaucrats.

Mid Tex Mod grew out of informal conversations among Central Texas residents who noticed the same troubling pattern: exceptional mid-century modern buildings were being demolished with no public discussion, no documentation, and no organized opposition. In response, a small group of architects, historians, and design enthusiasts formed the Central Texas chapter of Docomomo US — the international organization dedicated to the Documentation and Conservation of the Modern Movement.

Our scope spans six cities. Austin, San Antonio, Corpus Christi, San Angelo, College Station, and Waco each hold distinct collections of postwar modernist architecture shaped by local climate, industry, and culture. No other preservation organization in Texas focuses exclusively on this era across a multi-city region. That singular focus lets us develop deep expertise in the building types, architects, and preservation challenges unique to mid-century design.

What Docomomo US brings to the table. As an official Docomomo US chapter, Mid Tex Mod connects Central Texas preservation efforts to a national network of scholars, architects, and advocates. Docomomo US supports local chapters with research resources, publicity, and connections to federal preservation programs. When a building in San Angelo or Waco faces a demolition threat, we can amplify that story beyond city limits.

All-volunteer, all-mission. Every person who works on Mid Tex Mod does so without compensation. Our board members, tour guides, researchers, and event organizers contribute their time because they believe mid-century modern architecture matters. This structure means we carry zero salary overhead. When you donate to Mid Tex Mod, your money funds building documentation, public events, advocacy campaigns, and educational materials — nothing else.

Frequently Asked Mid Tex Mod

Mid Tex Mod was established to address a growing gap in Central Texas historic preservation. While organizations existed for 19th-century and early 20th-century buildings, no group specifically advocated for modernist architecture from the 1940s through 1970s.
Docomomo stands for Documentation and Conservation of buildings, sites, and neighborhoods of the Modern Movement. It is an international nonprofit founded in the Netherlands in 1988, with national chapters around the world. Mid Tex Mod serves as the Central Texas working party of Docomomo US.
